Over the weekend, I was in State College, PA, staying at the Wyndham Garden Inn for my daughter’s 4th-grade State Basketball Championships. During our team dinner at The View Restaurant & 19th Hole Lounge, I was immediately drawn to the smash burger offerings on the menu. Sometimes I like a thick, juicy burger, but at others I crave a crispier, smashed patty that seems to pack a lot more seasoning and flavor into every bite. And, it was worth every calorie. Unfortunately, not every restaurant serves the burger in the smashed-to-order style. Here are 5 chain restaurants where the burgers are actually smashed to order.

Smashburger Signature Classic

Smashburger lives up to the hype of its name, pressing patties fresh with a crispy sear. Megan Hageman, one of our reviewers, confirms it is one of “the meatiest” burgers in the genre. “Despite its smash burger nature, it displays body and depth while still maintaining that quintessential charred exterior and plenty of peppery, seasoned flavor. I was ready to hand Smashburger the victory based on this information alone,” she says in a review. Add the toppings and the “buttery” bun, and you get perfection. “Buoyant yet chewy, it rounds out the sandwich, creating pure burger bliss,” she says.

Shake Shack ShackBurger

Shake Shack ShackBurger is one of the chain’s most popular offerings, featuring a crispy-edged smashed-to-order burger. Shake Shack culinary director Mark Rosati explained to TastingTable that the chain uses proper cooking techniques to get the perfect smash. They place pucks of cold beef on a hot cast-iron skillet, then smash them with a metal spatula. “It’s an old Midwest/Cali technique. By smashing the meat on the griddle, it starts to caramelize instantly for a perfect sear,” he says.

Culver’s ButterBurger

Culver’s flips a quality burger, pressed thing with lacy edges. “Garlicky with a smooth, pressed-together demeanor, the meat almost melts in your mouth. Accompanied by the gently buttered, marginally sweet bun, the entire sandwich is nearly unstoppable—keyword, nearly. I was happy with my topping selection. The crunchy pickles and onion slices elevate the beef without overpowering it—like what I experienced at Steak ‘n Shake. And the ketchup and mustard are a condiment match made in heaven—the perfect sweet, bold, and tangy duo. There is a reason why this burger is the chain’s bread and butter,” Hageman writes.

Freddy’s Steakburgers

Freddy’s Steakburgers feature caramelized patties smashed thin with a crispy crust with signature Freddy’s seasoning. One Redditor maintains that they “do smash burgers pretty well. Most fast food places don’t,” while another calls it the “Best burger chain in the country, full stop.”

The Habit Burger Double Char

The Habit serves up a chargrilled smash-style burger with smoky, bold flavor. The Double Char comes with two freshly smashed beef patties, caramelized onions, crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, pickles, and mayo on a toasted bun. “Habit is wildly underrated. Double char is as solid as they come,” writes a Redditor.

No one goes to a fast food restaurant expecting a 100% clean, nutritious meal, but the health qualities of burgers and sandwiches vary wildly between chains, and even between menu items. If you’re not careful, one burger (especially if it’s a combo) can easily wipe out your calorie count for the day, and then of course there’s also the fat, sodium, carbohydrates and sugar amount, plus how highly processed the meat/bun/sauces/sides are.

The “surprise” element is very relevant here: For example, no one orders Fatburger’s XXXL Triple Kingburger thinking “this is a nice light burger for lunch”, but you might be shocked at how calorie-dense a reasonable option is—like the Five Guys Cheeseburger, which virtual primary care website PlushCare recently dubbed the most unhealthy burger you can order.

RELATED: 7 Best Fast-Food Burgers of All Time, According to Chefs

Why? Here’s how PlushCare breaks it down: “We assessed the relative unhealthiness of cheeseburgers from 16 popular American fast-food joints based on a nutrient profile score determined by the amount of energy (kJ), saturated fat (g), total sugar (g) and sodium (mg) present in each burger.” The Five Guys Cheeseburger got a score of 50. “According to our calculations, the Five Guys cheeseburger is the most unhealthy in its class, primarily because it has 73% more saturated fat than any other fast-food cheeseburger,” the company states.

Whataburger Jalapeno and Cheese Burge

Whataburger’s Jalapeño & Cheese and the Smash Burger Classic Smash came in second with a score of 42, while Burger King and McDonald’s got a comparatively lower score of 18 points. “Burger King and McDonald’s cheeseburgers are tied on relatively low unhealthiness scores (18 points). They each have less than a quarter of the saturated fat of a cheeseburger at Five Guys and less than half that of a Wendy’s cheeseburger. While some fats are healthy, saturated fats carry a heart disease risk and can lead to weight gain,” PlushCare says.

RELATED: I Tried the 4 Highest-Quality Fast-Food Burgers & the Best Was Ultra-Fresh & Flavorful

The chain with the lowest (therefore best) score was Culver’s, which scored 17 points for its famous Butterburger.

Culver's Butterburger Single

While Five Guys scored high with saturated fat, the chain is also known for high standards when it comes to the quality of its ingredients: Fresh, never frozen patties are prepared on a flat-top grill and cooked until well done and juicy. “You won’t see us using timers, just our eyeballs, to know when a burger is finished,” the chain says. “When we say our food is handmade, we mean it. Our beef is hand-pattied and fries are cut right in the store. Each morning, our talented crews tear lettuce by hand, carefully chop onions, thinly slice green peppers and jalapeños, and much more.”

So, as with anywhere you go to eat, check the nutrition, plan accordingly, and let a treat be a treat sometimes.

Some people order a cheeseburger and fries. However, if I see onion rings on the menu, I firmly stand by it as the perfect combo. There is something about a burger smothered in cheese with all the fixings, paired with lightly breaded onion rings that are deep-fried to perfection, that just hits the right flavor notes for me. Not every chain has delicious cheeseburgers and rings. Here are 6 chain restaurants that nail cheeseburgers and onion rings.

Culver’s ButterBurger & Rings

Culver’s has delicious food all around. “Culvers is probably the best all around fast food there is. High quality ingredients, consistent, always hot and the restaurants are always clean. Lots of good stuff there in addition to the burgers,” one person says. Another shared a photo of their cheeseburger-and-onion-ring combo. “It was fantastic. Fresh, hot, very flavorable. Would recommend and do again,” a Redditor says. “‘I’d put a couple of those rings on the burger!!!!” another adds. “Awesome for fast food and very good for non fast food,” a third agrees.

Freddy’s Steakburger & Rings

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a quickly growing chain, specializes in smash burgers and custard, and these rings are delicious. “Freddy’s is way better for a Midwest smash burger and their cheese curds are actually good unlike Culver’s,” one person maintains, while another declared it a “god level” burger. “Had Freddy’s for the first time in Arkansas a while back and was shocked at how good it was,” another said. “Freddy’s Steakburgers has some of the best onion rings in the fast food business,” a Redditor claims.

RELATED: 7 Chain Restaurants With the Best Smashburger Cheeseburgers

Whataburger Cheeseburger & Rings

Whataburger is “committed to freshness” and even has a manifesto page on its website. “Your Whataburger doesn’t hit the grill until you order it,” they write, adding that they use only 100% fresh, never-frozen American beef and fresh vegetables, chopped in-house daily. And, their rings are no exception. “Whataburger has the best onion rings I’ve ever had,” a Redditor claims. I like onions but I’ve never been a huge fan of onion rings, this has changed everything lol. It’s so good.” Another adds: “Onion rings and the patty melt are the best things they have to offer.” “It’s even better when you dip it in the spicy ketchup!! The tempura batter REALLY elevates the ring,” a third chimes in.

Portillo’s Burger & Rings

Portillo’s, famous for its juicy Italian roast beef sandwiches, also offers a charbroiled burger, which is delicious with cheese. “I love the charbroiled flavor that they get on the meat! So delicious. Adding bacon on it is always a great option!” writes a Redditor. “Underrated – love the charr on them,” another adds. “Portillo’s has pretty good onion rings,” a Redditor says. “For real. I always get their onion rings instead of fries. So much better,” another adds.

Dairy Queen Burgers & Rings

It’s no secret that Dairy Queen’s burgers, only available at select locations, are delicious. And the rings are a must-order, according to Megan Hageman, one of our reviewers. They are “attractive-looking onion rings. Each one is golden brown and generously crusted. Various sizes of the hoops live together in a cute blue serving basket,” she says. They come out hot and are “served with a perfect ratio of breading to ring,” she says. “The onion itself is snappy without being too hard. Plus, I didn’t have to deal with the entire slice coming out in one bite, leaving behind an empty carcass of breading. The only flaw of Dairy Queen’s offering is that there isn’t a lot of seasoning or standout flavor. But all the bones of a good onion ring are there.”

Smashburger & Rings

Smashburger has quickly become one of my favorite burger chains. Not only are the burgers fresh, “expertly crafted with Certified Angus Beef,” the brand maintains on its website, but they have the best sides, including tater tots, brussels sprouts, and even onion rings. “The coating here is smoother and more uniform, with no crumbs. The batter adheres nicely for minimal mess while snacking in the car,” says Hageman, who recommends dipping them in the “enticing” Smash Sauce.

The post I Compared McDonald’s New Big Arch to the New and Improved Burger King Whopper and The Winner Surprised Me appeared first on Eat This Not That.

]]>
You’ve got to love the internet. Leave it to social media to pit CEOs of ultra popular fast food burger chains against each other, but here we are. Burger King vs McDonalds.

The whole burger comparison took off when a video of the CEO of McDonald’s showed him trying the Big Arch. He stoically referred to it as a product instead of a burger over and over, and hesitated before taking this minuscule, embarrassingly small nibble of the sandwich that made it look like he despised his own “product.” It went viral, and from there, other burger chain CEOs (like Burger King’s), responded by taking confident, massive bites of their own sandwiches. The CEO of Burger King went on to say that the Whopper has been newly revamped, adding a heartier mayonnaise with notes of citrus, fresher ingredients, improving the bun, and updating the way it’s served customers to preserve its shape and appearance. This launched another viral trend of foodies tackling the comparison, setting out to discover if the Big Arch or the newly revamped Whopper is better.

McDonald's Big Arch

The Look:

The Big Arch is McDonald’s way of incorporating a larger burger like the Big Mac in a new way. It’s stuffed with two patties, and topped with white cheddar cheese, regular onions, crispy onions, among other vegetables and slathered in a sauce that seems to be more mustard based from first glance, based on color. The Whopper is just a classic. It always looks superior and now it’s new and improved as far as quality of ingredients, the amount of vegetables and toppings, the shape and feel of the bun, and the taste of the mayonnaise. Comparing the size, the Whopper definitely seems more substantial and less sloppy. Important, especially when you’re eating it on the go.

Burger King New Whopper

The Taste of the New Whopper:

The Double Whopper with Cheese ($8.49) has been a longtime favorite fast food burger of mine. It’s the only one to me that actually tastes like grilled beef. I love when the juice from the tomatoes blends with the mayonnaise to create this fresh, delicious sauce that seems to scatter perfectly throughout the entire burger. It’ll always be one of my longtime favorites! That said, I’m not noticing too much of a difference. It looks a little different, but didn’t taste much different to me, despite the upgrades. It now comes in a box, half wrapped in paper, making it easy to take the handheld burger in your car or eat it on the go without it being crushed. The Whopper is usually my favorite, but it also lacked a little sauce. Everything was on the top, so in between the beef patties, and the bottom of the bread were dry creating this weird contrast of textures when I bit into it. That can just be how my Burger King made it, but it wasn’t pleasant compared to the Big Arch.

McDonald's Big Arch

The Taste of the Big Arch:

When it comes to the Big Arch ($9.99), I did notice a significant difference in flavor when comparing it to not only the Whopper, but the original Big Mac. It was absolutely loaded with sauce and toppings. Far messier and much harder to eat on the go, but the flavor was there and it was evenly distributed throughout each patty, and on each bun. I love adding crispy onions to dishes at home, and really appreciated the texture contrast of the crispy onions and the fresh onions on the burger. The sauce really made this. I love the Big Mac sauce, or even a classic ketchup and mayo combo for a burger, but this flavorful, mustard-based sauce brought something else to the table completely.

The Verdict:

I’ll always be a longtime fan of the Whopper with its delicious flame broiled taste, made even better now with the tangy mayo and the sturdier bun, but the Big Arch was a stand out favorite in this comparison. It wasn’t even close, which tells you everything you need to know about why you need to run to McDonald’s and get this “product” ASAP.

It’s hard to resist a good burger, and while there are plenty out there, Wagyu burgers elevate the experience with their rich marbling and intensely beefy flavor. Thanks to the higher fat content, the patties cook up exceptionally juicy and tender, delivering a buttery bite that feels far more indulgent than your standard backyard burger. That said, Wagyu-style burgers are still relatively uncommon on chain menus, since the beef is more expensive and typically considered a premium ingredient. However, a handful of restaurants have embraced the trend — and according to chefs, these are the chains serving Wagyu burgers worth seeking out.

What Makes a Crave-Worthy Wagyu Burger

Chef making meat balls for smash burger in kitchen.

When ordering a Wagyu burger, here’s what to look for, according to Dennis Littley, Chef and Culinary Expert at Ask Chef Dennis.

“A great Wagyu burger recipe is all about respecting the fat content, gently forming the patty, cooking it hot and fast to medium-rare, and pairing it with balanced toppings that enhance the buttery richness without overpowering it.”

BurgerFi

BurgerFi CEO Wagyu Burger

BurgerFi offers the taste and feel of a gourmet burger in a fast-food setting — with ingredients and portions that feel worth the price. The CEO Wagyu Burger is a must-try, chefs say.

“BurgerFi’s CEO Wagyu Burger is incredible,” per Chef Christos Bisiotis, Founder of Terpsi Hospitality. “Any of their locations I go to, the taste stays consistent.”

Chef Dennis agrees and says, “BurgerFi’s CEO Wagyu Burger elevates the classic cheeseburger with premium Wagyu beef layered alongside bold, savory additions for added texture and richness.” He adds, “The combination of quality beef, balanced toppings, and careful execution results in a burger that feels both luxurious and satisfying.”

NADC Burger

NADC Burger Wagyu Smashburger

NADC Burger is a small chain that you’ll find in major cities like New York, LA, Austin and more. The Wagyu Smashburger is getting a lot of buzz and Chef Dennis raves about it.

“NADC Burger’s Wagyu Smashburger focuses on high-quality beef smashed on a hot griddle to create deeply caramelized, crispy edges while keeping the center tender and juicy,” he says. “Its streamlined build allows the richness of the Wagyu and the intensity of the sear to take center stage.”

Bareburger

Bareburger Wagyu

Bareburger’s Ultimate Wagyu is another go-to for Chef Dennis.

“Bareburger’s Ultimate Wagyu showcases premium, well-marbled beef paired with thoughtfully selected toppings that complement its buttery richness,” he says. “Cooked to preserve moisture and finished on a sturdy bun, it strikes a refined balance between indulgent and clean, ingredient-driven flavor.”

Gordon Ramsay Burger

Gordon Ramsay Burger

The Steak Dinner Wagyu Burger at Gordon Ramsay Burger is pricey—$49.99 to be exact, but Chef Dennis says it’s worth trying at least once.

“The Steak Dinner Wagyu Burger at Gordon Ramsay Burger transforms a classic steakhouse experience into handheld form, featuring richly marbled Wagyu beef cooked with precision for maximum juiciness and flavor,” he says. “Layered with steakhouse-inspired components that add depth and texture, it delivers indulgence, balance, and bold, beef-forward satisfaction in every bite.”

Bubba Burger Angus Beef Chuck Burger Patties are not cheap, but according to shoppers, they are worth every cent. “I’ve seen these around but never tried them. It tastes great. No problems fitting on the bun, no aftertaste, seasoning was fine (but I’m midwestern so I don’t usually use a ton of extra seasoning). They even have almost a char,” writes a shopper. “I bought these in a pinch for a big party. I would never buy a frozen hamburger but I took someone’s recommendation. Since then several people have purchased and prepared with no regrets,” one writes. “!I was pleasantly surprised. My husband just threw them in the basket like most men do! I didn’t even know he got them til we were at check out. We had them for dinner and they were so tasty!! I would recommend them to all of my friends and family,” another adds.

Meat District SHAQ 100% Angus Half Pound Beef Patties

I’ve tried every frozen burger and these are INCREDIBLE!!! My husband and I are big into burgers so we were hoping for something finally good. We were tired of the cheap frozen bubba burgers people have made at bbqs. These are smoky. They’re JUICY! They don’t shrink down and they have the meatiest flavor. We are legit eating them for leftovers and we rarely do that unless we are making truffle burgers. RUN to get these,” one writes.
